the last waltz...analysis

Boys Like Girls is an American Pop Rock Band from Boston, Massachusetts. The release of their self-titles debut album Boys Like Girls helped them gain their mainstream recognition. The band has performed with several of bands, including Hit the Lights, Cute is What We Aim For, and A Thorn for Every Heart. Since the formation of Boys Like Girls in 2005, the band’s fame only grows larger, especially with the release of their most recent album Love Drunk, which was on September 8th, 2009.
“Thunder” by Boys Like Girls was released as an acoustic song in 2008 and was first premiered on the radio on March 6th, 2008. The band first posted the radio mix on their Myspace profile on March 11th 2008. This is a definitely a love song about a summer romance which unfortunately seems as if it were lost. They sing about how much they desperately want to hold onto the memories and never forget them. Not only is this song a great love song, but it is also full of different poetic devices. For example, the title “Thunder”, itself is symbolism. It symbolizes the power and strength of the love the singer shared with another. It was powerful that it could easily be compared to the power of thunder. The whole chorus would be an example of characterization. These lines describe the qualities and characteristics of the woman that he loved. There are also many metaphors in this song. For example, the lines “You’re eyes are the brightest of all the colors”, are comparing her eyes to all the brightest colors, with her eyes clearly being the brightest. Another metaphor is “your voice was the soundtrack of my summer”. This shows that her voice was the best sound the singer heard all summer. Another poetic device used in this song is imagery. This is clearly seen in the lines “And now I’m itching for the tall grass/ and longing for the breeze”. These lines create a picture in the listener’s mind. Also, “longing for the breeze” is sensory and makes the listener almost feel the breeze. A hyperbole is an extreme exaggeration, which is seem in the lines “I don’t ever wanna love another/ you’ll always be my thunder”. It is hard to believe the someone can never love anyone else. Also, there is an example of figurative language which is seen in the lines “strike me down with thunder/let me feel you in my veins”. Irony is another poetic device evident in this song. It is seem in the line “so bring on the rain”. It is ironic because when you think of a love song, you generally don’t think of rain. You would probably think of sunshine sand happiness. Rain makes the listener thing of sadness and gloominess. The song “Thunder” by Boys Like Girls is full of numerous poetic devices.
Boys Like Girls, in my opinion, did a good job expressing love through the song “Thunder”. It fits perfectly with the genre of love, and is also full of many different poetic devices. The main message of this song is that if you really love another, it never dies.
